My 2016 Trip to Croatia and Slovenia
21 Days solo
By the time I decided to visit Croatia and Slovenia, my ability to vacation solo had solidified. I learned to mix up long drives, several days at a single site so that I could both take pictures and recover, and locations that were well off the beaten path, so that I could avoid crowds.
A friend at work suggested that I should try to stay in a lighthouse and I found one on a tiny island with a total of 3 other inhabitants when I was there. That required that I hire a small “water taxi” to take me out to the island.
I chose two naturist resorts to stay in, since I had enjoyed naturist activities since my early 20s, but had not enjoyed them since. Having several days when I “couldn’t” do photography helped me put the camera down without guilt.
My route
Day 1 - Monday, May 16, 2016
Day 1 - Monday, May 16, 2016
Plitvice 20:21
Day one of my trip to Croatia.
The drive was a bit longer than I had expected, but difficult to gauge, because the GPS clock was off. Getting the car took about an hour. Luckily, I was the first in line. Returning the car on Sunday morning will not be a problem. I couldn't get the little red sticker for driving into Slovenia at the rental agency, I need to buy it before crossing the border, at the border, or soon after crossing the border. I've added a "to do".
I stopped for a little while in Rostoke and took pictures from the road. The little town looked quaint, but also crowded, and I wasn't really in the mood for it, so I'm happy to have dropped it.
I made it to Plitvice at about 18:30, I think, just time enough to buy a ticket and see the lake, as well as build an appetite for dinner, which I am finishing now with a large piece of cake.
I booked half board, so I got a limited set of choices. Not luxurious, but filling.
I may even have gotten a few nice pictures of the lake. More importantly, I made my plan for the morning with the girl at the info booth. I'll miss the first boat, which leaves, according to her, at 7am... The same time as breakfast starts. Still, I should be able to get an early start.
Tonight I want to review pictures, repack my suitcase, prepare my backpack, and prepare a few images to post tomorrow morning. I also need to study Russian and ukulele.
I found music for Matador, Falling Slowly, and Hey There, Delilah. Could be cool if I could learn all three on this trip.
Day 2 - Tuesday - May 17, 2016
Day 3 - Wednesday, May 18, 2016
Plitvice 06:39
I'm lying in bed and slowly waking up. OK, as I write, I'm awake, but it has taken a while. My legs are sore and tired. I did a lot of walking yesterday at Plitvice, and it was a pretty good day.
I got up early, got to breakfast 5 minutes before they opened. Was done eating in 10 minutes, and was at the boats at 7:30. I was the only one on the boat that crossed and I did start taking pictures immediately, but felt the hoards on my back as I hiked, so I felt under a little pressure. I managed, however, to make it to the main attraction before seeing anyone, and the first people I saw were an attractive young German couple. They asked me to take their picture and I directed them through it. It was actually fun.
On the way, I did manage to take a number of shots, shooting mostly with visible light and HDR. That requires a little patience. More people started showing up after I saw those two, but I still had a nice feeling of solitude for much of my hiking. Eventually, of course, I met the hordes, but by then, it was fairly late (10-11) and the light was getting boring.
I hiked to the top, asked at information if there was anything to eat (only at P1, back where I started). I ate a protein bar, discovered I could buy an ice cream and did so, then used the toilet and walked back down. On my way back down I took far fewer pictures. It took a while to pass all the slow, elderly tourists, but I was back to the boats by 1pm or so. I managed to get there in front of many people to get on the first boat (everyone I had seen made it on to the boat, so I just got a good seat).
When the boat began to sail, I realized I had gotten onto the wrong boat!
I checked with the captain and was able to hop from that boat to the first one leaving at the destination, but it meant waiting an extra 1 hour to get to the other side. Once finally there, I got a cheese burger and awful coffee, then walked back to my hotel and started working on pictures.
I found a few that I think I can publish already. Nothing really earth shattering. The best was probably of a green lizard I only saw because a small group of tourists were shooting it when I walked by. I shot it too and, with a lot of detail extraction, got a pretty good picture of it.
Today I decided to take it easy in the morning. Have breakfast, repack my things, then take my time driving to Valalta. It's a little colder than I had hoped, so I imagine that the water will only be good for quick dips. Otherwise, I hope to enjoy it. We shall see.
22.17
Despite my nerves, I made it into Valalta without any problems. I even managed to lay out in the sun enough to get a small sunburn. Yea.
Day 5 - Friday, May 20, 2016
Rovinj 15:55
First nice day at Rovinj after I arrived. Warm, mostly cloudy to begin with, but only partly cloudy now. I ran in the morning again, visited the sauna, went to the pool, walked around the park, and went back to the pool.
I was a little afraid that I had lost my watch, but found it while asking at Reception.
Also a bit concerned about getting too much sun too quickly, so I'm back in my room now.
Day 6 - Friday - May 21, 2016
Rovinj 17:43
I'm hungry. I have been skipping lunch, other than a banana, protein bar, and a small latte.
Today I had a couple of scoops of coconut ice cream as well.
Damn. I'm hungry. 30 minutes to dinner is ready, but I want to be there long enough to download the news and the TED talk.
Day 8 - Monday - May 23, 2016
Bohinj 19:34
First day in Slovenia. It's raining, but I managed to see a little sun after arriving. I took a few pictures as well.
The apartment is fine and has better wifi, at least. I got pizza for dinner after trying another restaurant and giving up on it. I'm stuffed, but glad I stuck with what I knew I wanted. The other restaurant ignored me for a long time and didn't have a real menu, and I didn't feel like risking it.
Day 9 - Tuesday - May 24, 2016
Bohinj 14:16
Ouch. My legs are tired, but I'm proud of myself (except for the fact that I ate pizza for dinner last night and for lunch today).
I got up early and by 8am I was out on a hike, wearing rain pants and having put a raincoat on my camera backpack. I ended up walking all the way around the lake. Yea! Ouch.
Now I'm back at the apartment and considering a nap.
Day 10 - Wednesday - May 25, 2016
Bohinj 08:23
I got up early this morning and went out to take pictures of the fog over the lake. After about an hour, I headed back for breakfast. About a half hour ago, the sun started burning off the fog and it was a bit painful to try to decide if I should go out to try to shoot it or not.
I decided not to.
This often happens. I get up early, go out to shoot, then end up losing steam before the real fireworks start. In this case, I decided that the location of the sun meant that I wasn't really going to see anything that I really needed to shoot. Who knows, perhaps I'm right.
The point is, I suppose, that I'm shooting for myself, so I get to choose, and I just didn't feel like it.
Not sure what I feel like doing today. After my long hike yesterday, I feel like a break, but I don't want to spend the entire day in the apartment. I could drive somewhere, thought I don't know where.
17.53
OK, I did take some more pictures once the sun was up, then generally enjoyed the sun. Then I came back to the apartment and sat out on the porch in the sun while it lasted, then worked on pictures.
Day 11 - Thursday - May 26, 2016
Day 12 - Friday - May 27, 2016
Bled 14:32
I'm in Bled for the first full day. I had fairly long conversations with the people who own the Airbnb apartment yesterday, separately. They are 52 and the husband does a lot of skiing, the wife lots of scuba diving. She was proud to show me lots of her underwater pictures of fish. Very cool. I showed her some of my pictures as well.
Then I got up at about 5:30 to get some morning shots, and felt immediately once I got outside that I was already too late. Shit!
I drove to a spot where I figured I could hike, took the wrong trail, ran back down then almost ran up the very steep trail, sweating so much it was hard to take any pictures. When I got to the top, the sun was already very high in the sky, and there was a couple having a picnic. They had cameras and tripods and I ended up having a long conversation with them. They were from Ireland, names Jane and Devon. That was actually kind of cool. I took a shot of them in infrared, because Devon was curious about infrared photography.
After breakfast, I was so tired I took a nap of at least an hour. Now I've just been relaxing as I work on pictures (Devon and Jane are ready to send). They said that I should contact them when I visit Ireland, and they will give me tips, which sounds perfect. They live close to Kerry, which I'd like to visit.
Think I'll have a bath.
22.09
I managed to climb up that hill once again to take pictures as the sun was getting close to setting. I feel better now. I may drive out to take some more pictures in the morning, but I won't hike to the top again. Instead, I'll just take pictures from the lake's edge and head back for breakfast. The Internet isn't working, though, so I can't see what the expected weather is.
Day 13 - Saturday - May 28, 2016
Day 14 - Sunday - May 29, 2016
Ferry to Vela Luka 18:25
I'm on the ferry from Split to Vela Luka. Talk about chaos! The unloading and boarding of the ship was amazingly badly organized. I got to Split 5 hours early, unfortunately, and it took me a while to figure out, with confidence, where to park. I finally picked a spot that a local directed me to, though it seemed insane, though turned out to be appropriate.
The ferry literally docked about 20m from the main street, with two lanes of "protected" parking/traffic beside the walkway and water, and two lanes of open traffic beside it. I was nervous about parking my car there, but checked with a pair of harbor officials and they seemed to agree. I parked close to the entrance, but not quite close enough, so two trucks parked in front of me.
I used the 5 hours to buy stamps, eat lunch, have a coffee, read and send email, buy and eat an ice cream, take a nap and walk around, but still was in the car a good hour before the ferry left. I felt nervous about being stuck behind the two trucks, especially as the lane beside me filled with other cars, and considered swinging out into the other lane myself, but decided against it. This turned out to be a good idea, because there were many cars stuck behind those waiting for the ferry, and after a while, they got pissed and this led to more chaos as cars tried to let other cars by.
Once the ferry emptied (and, again, this was just directly from the ferry into traffic, with pedestrians moving in between the trucks and cars), the trucks and cars waiting started filing in, and only then did I scoot out of my parking spot and around the trucks. I had to be quick, because many cars behind me wanted to do the same. I managed to be the first small car in the line of them, but I expect I'll be one of the last to leave the ferry, due to the way they parked us. Oh well. Even so, I did not have my pick of seats, as pedestrians had streamed on board first.
They didn't check my ticket until I had already driven on board. Luckily I felt certain that this was the right ferry. If it isn't, I'm screwed.
Otherwise, I've coordinated with both my AirBnB host and the ferry operator for tomorrow. We'll sail at 8:30 and I'll have time to do shopping. I read that it's possible to have dinner on the island, but I don't want to depend on this. They seem to feature lamb (yuck) and fish (risky). I'm not sure, however, what I'll be able to prepare for myself. Up until now, I've been making my own breakfast but eating out for dinner. We'll have to see what the supermarket has to offer.
Perhaps just ground beef and onions would be satisfying. We'll see.
I'm on the ferry, as I wrote, with tons of kids. They are noisy, but that's required for kids.
Day 15 - Monday - May 30, 2016
Susac 16:53
My first day on the little island. I woke early and did my shopping in a small butcher and then a slightly larger "supermarket". It'll be interesting to see if I have enough to feel fed for the entire three days. I understand that I can buy fish from the keepers, but I'm a little skeptical about that.
There may be another guest staying at the lighthouse, it's not really clear. They changed keepers today, and it's hard to know if all the people who were here were related to that exercise or not. In any case, I also believe now that there is a Shepard of sorts, living in what I thought were abandoned houses in the middle of the island.
I didn't managed to say goodbye to Marinka, who had been very nice with me last night, giving me two shots of an orange liqueur that she made herself, plus two crepes with orange filling that she also made. The apartment was huge and modern, despite the appearance of the building. It had internet, but only in the bedroom. Still, better than here. No internet on the little island. Oh, well, probably good to finally get completely off the grid.
I ate breakfast in a restaurant, 50 kuna for the buffet. I figured it's probably best to save the food I bought for the island. I left the apartment at about 8:15 because we had agreed on 8:30 for the transfer to the island. I struggled to find the travel agency, but only because my map told me it was on a little side street, but it was actually right on the Main Street (big sign).
I was able to park my car far into the city in a small lot after dropping my bags off at the boat, a little "water taxi". The travel agent drove me there and back. I need to remember to call him the day after tomorrow to agree on a time for him to pick me up.
I actually enjoyed the boat ride, which took a little over an hour. I stood the whole time, holding onto a rail with one or two hands (pretending to wind surf). As we approached the island, the fog was so think that it took a while before it suddenly appeared. To get from the boat to the island, all my luggage and myself had to transfer to another little boat, and then jump from that boat to land, because the waves would not allow us to put the boat right up against the "dock", which was really just a slab of cement.
The keepers have a little tractor and trailer to bring luggage up to the lighthouse, which was great. I had left all my dirty laundry and some clean socks and shirts in the trunk of my rental car in an extra duffle bag I brought. I think that was a wise move.
Once we got up to the lighthouse, the keeper showed me to my apartment, which is on the "first" floor (up one flight of stairs). It has two bedrooms, I'm in the larger, a good sized kitchen and a bathroom with a real bath. Ah! I just took my first.
I unpacked all my things and made the bed. I had arrived at about 10am, and decided to explore the island when I had finished all this, so I packed a lunch, towel, sunscreen, and water in my Swiss army side bag and headed out. This was when I saw others arriving. I thought one was another guest, and perhaps he is. He seemed American. I have not seen him since though, so perhaps he was actually a keeper, or perhaps he left. No sure, doesn't matter.
Off I went, after waiting to see if the keeper would give me any warnings. I explored first on the left side of the island, and found a small walkway down to a boat launch, then back up to the middle path, all the way to the mostly abandoned stone buildings. There I heard a radio in some newer buildings that appeared in bad shape, but is probably home for the Shepard. There were a few goats wondering about and baa'ing. I found that a bit spooky, actually, not the goats, the radio. I didn't see anyone but left quickly.
Then I walked down to the one beach I knew about in advance. It was easy to find an is fairly nice, although unfortunately there is a lot of trash that has probably washed up during various storms. Mostly plastic bottles and other junk that I expect has not been left by visitors but rather has just escaped from some other location and made it way here on the high seas.
I spent a little time exploring a bit. There were a couple of buildings that were obviously temporary shelters for people who probably come here periodically, one actually included a tent, though I didn't check to see if there was anyone in it.
The water looked beautiful, despite the garbage on the beach, and I started looking in earnest for a location to both lay out and go into the water. I picked a spot, but, after checking the water and confirming that it was warm enough to get into but not so warm as to invite jumping in with no concern for the shock, I took off all my clothing and slowly looked for an entrance, ending up at the beach so that I could walk in slowly. Climbing out at my spot was easy enough, however. I actually climbed back in to see if this was a good entrance, and decided against it, but I didn't go in the water again.
Instead, I ate lunch, then lathered sunscreen on and laid down for a nap. Ah! It was very nice.
I probably stayed there for about an hour, perhaps a little less, then walked back up to the houses, down to the other side of the island (cool that I could move from the East coast to the West coast in minutes. The West coast, unfortunately, does not seem to have any potential beaches. I think the rental description claims that there are two beaches, but I only found one. Also, there is a fence at this point in the island, and I'm not sure if that's just to keep the goats from heading over to the other side or the tourists too, so I only explored a little on the other edge of the fence. I need to ask the keepers about the other beach and whether it's OK to go over the fence.
I returned to the center trail then went down to the East coast again and followed it all the way back to the original harbor. I think there are plenty of places where I can make interesting HDR shots. I need to make a to do list.
After getting about as far as I could, I returned to the lighthouse at about 3pm. By then, I was pretty hot and tired. I wanted a cup of coffee, but the stove did not have an electric pilot, so I needed to ask the keeper for a lighter. They thought it was out of gas, but it had enough and the keeper gave me his lighter. Too bad he had to carry a new gas bottle all the way up, then all the way down again.
Lunch was two bananas, a cup full of cherry tomatoes, and a protein bar. I drank the coffee without anything else, and now I'm eating a yogurt. That leaves me with...
5 bananas, 4 yogurts, 3 protein bars, a half of bag of pistachio nuts, a full bag of peanuts, 10 eggs, 3 100g packages of cold cuts for omelets and sandwiches, two baguettes, 8 sausages, cheese, milk, coffee, sugar, butter, mayonnaise, about a third of a 500g package of cherry tomatoes, and one very stale roll. Will that keep me fed for tonight, two full days, and my final breakfast? I hope so, but there is the option for fish on the last night if I need it (I hope).
Let's see, how do I ration?
Tonight
Dinner: 2-4 sausages, Scrambled egg?, Half a baguette and butter?
Dessert: Pistachio nutsEach other day
Breakfast: 2 egg omelet with ham and cheese (first day on the toasted stale roll), Coffee, Yogurt, Banana
Lunch: Half baguette sandwich with cold cuts, cheese, and mayonnaise (or butter), Protein bar, Tomatoes, Snack
Afternoon: coffee, Banana, Yogurt
Dinner: 2-4 Sausages, Scrambled egg, Half a baguette with butter
That should keep me fed. I probably won't even lose weight.
Susac 09:17
Day 2 on Susac.
Yesterday as sunset approached, and as I made dinner, I noticed that I had filled the kitchen with smoke, and this led to a beam of light shining through the shutters. At first, this was just embarrassing, but then I realized I could take a picture, which I did with my iPhone. It took a long time for the smoke to dissipate, so I realized I could use my big camera, then eventually realized that the scene would look better with a nude in front of it, and stripped.
I took pictures for quite a while, at one point realizing that there were a couple of men and a woman close to the lighthouse. Probably sailors visiting the island. The keepers told me later that they were fisherman, but I'm skeptical.
Anyway, when I finally went out to try to capture the sunset itself, the keepers, now two older men, grabbed me for pancakes and snaps. I convinced them to wait until I took some pictures, but went in fairly quickly and enjoyed both the pancakes (crepes) and the snaps. They don't speak English very well, so I did not stay for very long, but they offered to have the older of the two take me around the island at 10am the next day.
Now I feel a little trapped as I wait for 10am in the apartment. I don't feel like going out and having to climb back up, so I'm just waiting.
Ah, just occurred to me that he also said that I could use the computer with the wifi in the office, I should try that...
Day 17 - Wednesday, June 1, 2016
Susac 19:46
Day 3 (last day) on Susac.
Well, today was cloudy and cooler than the last two days, and, of course, was the day when I remembered my flippers, snorkel, mask, and underwater camera. Took a more direct path to the beach, taking pictures along the way, thinking that I'd go over to the military side of the island, but by the time I got to the sheep, I had lost my motivation to fight my way through the bushes. I went down to the beach, ate my lunch, then headed back to the lighthouse.
I still managed to get in all my exercise for the day, plus have packed, practiced ukulele, studied Russian, copied pictures to my MacBook (in case of external drive failure or loss), made dinner, and now have time to write before sunset.
It looks as though it may be a nice sunset tonight, but I can't decide how I might want to capture it. Last night I did HDR pictures of the sunset with flowers in front of it. They seemed to work fairly well. I can do the same again, but it seems like I should take advantage of the nicer sunset to do something different. I'm just not very motivated.
The challenge, of course, is finding a subject to put in front of the sun. Hmmm, there is the "other" beach, which is really just a place for a boat. Yes, that would work. Must pack up if I'm going to make it.
20.59
Well, I made it, just barely, but I managed to take a few pictures. I almost fell a couple of times on the way down the path, because I was rushing a bit, but no major injuries. I've come down to the office to try my luck with Internet access and, surprisingly, it's working fairly well now, so I'm downloading the news. It will take at least a half hour for one episode, however, so I'm looking for something to distract me while I wait.
I also downloaded a Guitar Tabs app because I've started learning "Living in a Movie" by Julie Peel and, although I think I've figured out the strumming pattern, I can see that the bridge looks impossible. The app, which is free, but I started a membership which will cost me after 1 week, actually does look pretty good, so I'll probably just buy the membership.
It's actually a pretty nice sunset. I haven't looked out the window since I got here, so I didn't notice that the colors outside are still quite nice. Oh well.
In general, I've enjoyed my stay on this little island. I both managed to take some pictures that I think are pretty good (practiced more HDR), managed to play on the rocks two days in a row, and managed to get a lot of exercise as well.
The Internet turned out to be a good investment, even though I "abused" it and had to wait until the new month to get it working again. I only actually missed a single day of posting to Flickr, thanks to the wifi available in most places.
Day 18 - Thursday, June 2, 2016
Ferry to Split 16:01
Big travel day.
I left the island at 8am this morning and got to Vela Luka at about 9am. I had not prepared to pay the water taxi, which was a bit embarrassing, but managed to scrape together enough cash using two cards, the cash I had on hand, and the Euro I had on hand.
The guy at the tourist agency suggested that I visit the old town. I drove to the other side of the island and drove through the town, but just as I got there, a ferry was dropping off a hundred tourists or more, so I drove immediately back to the quieter Vela Luka.
I parked the car and had lunch, then moved the car over to the ferry terminal and wrote a few more postcards (letters, really), walked back to the post office to send 6 more (I sent 13 in Split).
As I walked back, I saw a ferry gliding into port and thought I had gotten the timing perfectly, but it turned out that was not _my_ ferry, but another one. I had to wait another hour for my ferry, which I am on now.
I still have about an hour to go to get to Split, then about 4 hours to get to the camp site. I've warned them that I will arrive late, so I expect to stop along the way for dinner at some highway rest stop.
I continue to enjoy being alone. I wonder, actually, if I will be able to return to traveling with someone. It's so nice to travel alone. I don't need to struggle to find something to say. I can do what I want when I want to. I suppose one thing I can learn is to not only listen to what I want when I'm alone, but also to have awareness of what I want when I'm with someone and tell them as well. This has always been difficult. I'm pretty well convinced that this is due to my being an introvert. I'm not sure, however, whether traveling with an introvert would help.
I'm a bit tired. I wonder if I can take a nap.
Day 20 - Saturday, June 4, 2016
Baska 07:56
My last full day on vacation.
It's been a great vacation. Yesterday I wrote Malene and told her how pleased I have been with all my choices. It's quite true. I also told her that I don't think I would have been able to enjoy it quite so much if I had had someone with me, because I would have been nervous about them not liking my choices. Even if they liked it as much as I did, I would not have been able to relax as much.
