Dave (and Rod and Eric)

When I started school at Northeastern, there was a housing shortage and I was placed in a temporary room in a dorm called Stetson East. This meant that they slid an extra bed in a room that happened to have a little extra space and I stayed there for a week or so. Then they moved the bed into a windowless meeting room and I lived there for a few weeks. Finally, they moved me into a room in Stetson West, which had an entirely different entrance.

Dave lived on the same floor in Stetson East, down the hall from my temporary rooms. I don’t remember how we started hanging out. He was in the Business College and I was studying Computer Science. Nevertheless, we hit it off. He, and a few other friends, took school seriously and we started a friendly competition to see who could get the best grades. After being teased both a home and in high school for getting good grades, this was a welcomed change and probably helped me do well at university.

After Freshman year, Dave and I got a room together and we continued to live together for even a year after we graduated. A few times we also shared an apartment with Eric and Rod, so I’ve included pictures of them below as well.

Dave invited me to join him on a summer trip to Nova Scotia along with his twin sister, Ginny, and his father and grandmother. That was my first time outside of the US (other than the first year of my life, which I spent in Germany).

Dave, Rod, and Eric were the first group of male friends that I had. Through most of high school, my friends were all female. Rod called me Beckman for some reason. We all affectionately teased Dave for being a geek. Somehow I got the idea to create a satirical newspaper making fun of Dave, which I called The Morton Press. It was a mix of teasing his idiosyncrasies and suggesting that people considered him some kind of god because of them.

I intended it as a one off, but later Rod wanted to write a new issue. I didn’t feel motivated for that, so while stalling Rod, I wrote a paper satirizing Rod instead, called The Rod Mano Report. I left it for him to find when he returned from a weekend visit to his girlfriend and when I woke up found a note under my door with the title Bamboozled by Bellerose.

You can see both papers at the very bottom of this page.
