Denmark - Volleyball
Volleyball was the first sport I ever really took up.
I come from a family that played a lot of sports (not me, them).
Baseball, golf, tennis… my father and brothers played and excelled at much of what they tried. I did not. I did try, a bit, early on, but the consensus pretty quickly was that I was good at books, not sports.
After university, I started working with a group of people who played volleyball and did not know that I was inept at sports, so they invited me to join. I actually did pretty well.
I like that it is a no-contact sport and playing well requires communicating well with your team.
I mostly stopped playing when I moved to California in 1992, although I did play some when visiting Ukraine on business.
In 2014, I was looking for excuses to take pictures and came across a beach volley tournament. Though I’m not really drawn to sports photography, I decided to give it a try.
