Today was about drawing fabric, and, once again, my struggle was about deciding which directions to draw the lines which should represent the various planes made by the folds in the fabric.

Unlike last week, I pretty quickly got the basic shape and size of the reference “model”. My layered comparison, which I made the morning after, shows that I wasn’t far off in terms of the width, although my sketch was not as tall as the reference.

In any case, being quicker this week meant that I could spend more time attempting to put into practice this idea of drawing lines in certain directions to represent the folds.

No matter how I looked at it, I could not confidently decide which direction was appropriate for any given fold. Whatever I tried was just as likely to fail as succeed (at least, based on both my own eyes and the comments of the instructor when she came by), so it felt random.

I decided to ask for help. The teacher’s explanation and demonstration sort of made sense, but I just couldn’t make sense of what I should do in cases that weren’t exactly where the teacher was demonstrating (and, in case your confused, everything that looks “good” in the center of my sketch was actually put there by the instructor to demonstrate).

At the moment, I’m still lacking confidence that I’ll figure out what exactly the instructors at TegneSkole are attempting to explain, which is frustrating, because I am convinced that there is a technique that I’m missing. I just can’t get my head around it.
